Scholars in J-1 status and their J-2 dependant family members are required by US law to have health insurance that meets certain minimum coverage standards for the entire duration of their stay. Health insurance may come from the home country provided it meets the J-1 requirements. Visiting scholars in J-1 status may purchase health insurance through the Carnegie Mellon University Student Health Center.
